Hard Rock exhibits go on the road

It was a completely pleasant surprise one night to go into work at USA TODAY and see portions of the Hard Rock Cafe traveling memorabilia exhibits. So I happily started snapping photos with my iPhone.

I wish that I had posted this earlier because these great exhibits have already visited New York, Philadelphia, Florida, Boston and Pittsburgh since starting in February.

The “Gone Too Soon” and “Music Gives Back” collections will tour Hard Rock locations across the U.S. throughout 2013, giving fans a closeup look at pieces of history from music superstars and legends.

“Gone Too Soon” honors music icons whose lives and careers were cut short. The collection has items such as a dress worn by Amy Winehouse during a 2008 Nelson Mandela tribute concert, a 1990s stage outfit from Whitney Houston and an eighth-grade yearbook from Kurt Cobain.  Many of the musicians represented in the exhibit are part of the so-called “27 Club,” a group of artists including Jim Morrison, Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, Kurt Cobain and most recently Winehouse, all of whom died at the age of 27.

It also includes John Lennon’s handwritten lyrics to the Beatles classic song “Help,” a cape used on the cover of  Joplin’s album Pearl and a 1968 Gibson SG Custom played by Jimi Hendrix in concert and on The Dick Cavett Show.

The exhibit features items including a gown worn by Shakira during her 2006 Oral Fixation tour, a poem that was handwritten by Bruce Springsteen for bandmate Clarence Clemons and an Eko 12-string guitar used by Eric Clapton on the Blind Faith album and on George Harrison’s All Things Must Pass.
